Kalash Road and Getting There
You reach the Kalash Valley through Chitral: fly from Islamabad (about 1 hour) or drive via the Lowari Tunnel (about 12–14 hours). From Chitral the road passes Ayun and continues 2–3 hours on a narrow mountain road into Bumburet, Rumbur or Birir. Weather and landslides can cause delays, so keep a buffer day.

How has the Lowari Tunnel changed the journey?
The Lowari Tunnel has improved year-round road access to Chitral compared with the older pass road. [CONFIRM: tunnel opening hours or closures]
What is the road like from Chitral to the valleys?
After Ayun the road narrows into a mountain track with steep drops and rough sections. We use suitable vehicles with drivers who know the route. [CONFIRM: current surface and works]
Which season is best for the road?
- May–October: most reliable
- Winter (December–February): snow possible, slower driving, Chaumos season
- Spring and monsoon: landslide risk after heavy rain [CONFIRM]
What delays should I expect?
Flight cancellations due to weather, landslides, road works and snow can all add hours or a day. Build a buffer day into your plan, especially when flying.
