The Kalash People
One of the World's Oldestand Most Endangered Cultures
Tucked between the towering ridges of the Hindu Kush, the Kalash people of Chitral are among the last surviving pagan tribes of South Asia.
Some historians trace them to the soldiers of Alexander the Great; others to ancient Nuristan or a distant homeland the Kalash themselves remember as Tsiyam. Once ruling large parts of Chitral in the 10th–14th centuries, today only about 3,700 Kalash remain living in the three valleys of Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir.
Their Polytheist faith, presided over by the great god Mahandeo, is woven into everyday life through music, seasonal dance, and the sacred role of the Dehar (shaman). Visiting Kalash isn't a checklist tour it's a window into a way of life the world has almost lost.

Kalash Tours (kalashtours.com) is the Kalash Valley brand of Chaqon Global Tours, a licensed Chitral-based tour operator run by people from the valleys. We operate guided cultural tours, festival departures and private trips to Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, and have been hosting travellers since 2018.
The Kalash valleys — Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir — sit in Lower Chitral district in the Hindu Kush of northern Pakistan. Most travellers fly Islamabad to Chitral (about 1 hour) or drive via the Lowari Tunnel (about 12–14 hours), then continue 2–3 hours by jeep from Chitral town to the valleys.
Yes. The Kalash valleys are among the most welcoming areas of Pakistan and are regularly visited by domestic and international travellers. Roads are mountain jeep tracks, so we use experienced local drivers, keep group sizes small and provide 24/7 on-tour support with a local guide from the valleys.
Most nationalities do not need a special permit for Bumburet, Rumbur or Birir; a valid Pakistan visa is enough, and foreign visitors register at a checkpoint on entry. We handle registration, documentation and any current requirements as part of every tour.
Chilam Joshi (Zhoshi) is the spring festival in mid-May, Uchal (Uchaw) is the harvest festival in August, Phoo is the autumn grape and walnut festival in September–October, and Chaumos is the sacred winter solstice festival in December. We run dedicated festival departures for all four.
May to October gives the best weather, open passes and green valleys. Mid-May is best for Chilam Joshi, August for Uchal, autumn for Phoo and grape harvest, and December for Chaumos if you are comfortable with snow and cold.
Cost depends on trip length, group size, transport (air or road) and accommodation. We quote every trip in writing before you commit, with inclusions listed clearly — send an inquiry and we reply with dates and a full written quote.
Four to five days is the practical minimum from Islamabad. Six to eight days lets you combine Chitral town, two or three Kalash valleys and a festival without rushing the mountain roads.
